Travellers often call them different durian “species”, but the more accurate agricultural terms are varieties, cultivars or registered clones. Malaysia’s Department of Agriculture identifies selected clones with D-numbers, including D197 Musang King and D200 Black Thorn.

FIVE MALAYSIAN DURIAN VARIETIES
Musang King
Raja Kunyit · 猫山王
- Taste
- Intensely rich and sweet, balanced by a clean bitter finish. Its aroma is strong, layered and lingering.
- Texture
- Very thick, smooth and custard-like, usually with a generous flesh-to-seed ratio.
- Flesh colour
- Deep golden yellow
- Best for
- Experienced durian lovers who enjoy a powerful sweet-bitter profile.
Black Thorn
Duri Hitam · Ochee · 黑刺
- Taste
- Full-bodied sweetness with caramel-like depth and a gentle bitter edge. The flavour can feel rounder and sweeter than Musang King.
- Texture
- Dense, creamy and almost fudge-like, with very little fibre when perfectly ripe.
- Flesh colour
- Deep yellow to orange-gold
- Best for
- Travellers seeking a luxurious, sweet and complex premium durian.
D24 (Sultan)
Sultan · 苏丹王
- Taste
- Balanced sweetness with mild bitterness and a classic nutty durian aroma. Less aggressive than the most intense premium cultivars.
- Texture
- Creamy and smooth but slightly lighter and softer than Musang King.
- Flesh colour
- Pale to medium yellow
- Best for
- First-time visitors wanting a classic Malaysian durian at an approachable intensity.
Red Prawn
Udang Merah · Ang Heh · 红虾
- Taste
- Prominently sweet, fruity and gently aromatic, with less bitterness than Musang King or Black Thorn.
- Texture
- Soft, silky and creamy, sometimes slightly sticky at peak ripeness.
- Flesh colour
- Orange-yellow to salmon-orange
- Best for
- Beginners, families and anyone who prefers a sweeter durian with little bitterness.
Tekka
Tekka · Musang Queen · 竹脚
- Taste
- A bold bittersweet profile with nutty depth. Its sweetness opens first, followed by a more mature bitter finish.
- Texture
- Thick, buttery and slightly sticky, with a satisfying dense bite.
- Flesh colour
- Rich yellow to warm orange
- Best for
- Durian enthusiasts who want a less famous cultivar with serious character.
ORCHARD TASTING TIPS
How to taste durian like a local
Start mild
Begin with D24 or Red Prawn before Musang King, Black Thorn or Tekka so the strongest flavours do not overwhelm the gentler ones.
Compare one pod
Try one pod from each cultivar and notice sweetness, bitterness, fibre, stickiness and the length of the finish.
Visit in season
Seasons vary by state, weather and orchard. Confirm which cultivars are available on your visit date before travelling.
